And he put me on my personal best on artificial I spent a few days fishing with Captain Jim the week of July 27th through August 2nd and man was it a blast! I came down to the Big G for my vacation not really expecting anything like what happened fishing with Jim! It was enough to get me to come back down and fish with him again the next weekend though! During these dog days of summer with real feel temps of 105+ and water temps of around 90 and more you don't really expect to go on the water and have the greatest of days no matter where you are fishing! However, with the knowledge Jim has on the lake and know how of when and where the big ones are going to be, we managed to sack around 20-26 pounds in our best five each day we fished together! And he put me on my personal best on artificial, so you can't beat that! This man knows his stuff and can put you on em'! Not only is Jim an awesome guide and a pretty cool guy to fish with, he is a class act! Not being from around the area and not having any clue what goes on in the area; Jim showed me a couple cool tackle stores, some awesome places around town to eat, and a few local hangouts! He definitely made me feel more at home which isn't something you get out of your every day guide service! I will definitely be making another trip back to fish with him soon when the big girls really are chewing! If you want to go out and have a good time on the water while having a good shot at your personal best sack of fish or personal best fish of a lifetime, I would suggest giving Captain Jim a call!

Went out yesterday with Cap. Jim. Very impressed. I was hesitant to pay for any guide thinking there would be alot of small fish. I was wrong. Captain Jim in my opinion is a first class guide. He will try his best to put you on a fishing trip of a life time. He supplies you with everything you need to fish with. His co-partner Belle is a very loving dog. After a day on the water with the two of them you will have made a new friend. He is very knowledgeable of the lake and how to locate fish. We caught or 70 bass, 2 were 7 pounders, several 4 and 5 pounders. We were fishing lipless crank baits and man were they crushing them. He will supply you with everything you need to catch'm, all you need is time to enjoy, relax, and make great memories.
The weather was crazy that day, 65 degrees that morning with lite rain and 45 degrees after lunch. You can tell by looking how we were dressed. But the fishing was HOT🎣🎣.

Fished 2 days with Captain Jim and his his awesome assistant Lily. I had a great time!!! He is an enjoyable dude to be around and just have a conversation let alone he knows how to get you on fish! By far my best day ever on Guntersville. We boated well over 20 in an hour or so at one point. I was fortunate enough to get one over 6 and got to check a couple things off my bucket list. I would recommend Jim whenever you have a chance to go. I know I will be back, hopefully sooner than later.

Long overdue review but we SMOKED em out on the lake with Captain Mike. 23 in the boat before 11:30 is a freaking WIN! Mike is knowledgeable and friendly as heck.. he’ll greet you with a “Welcome to Alabama” handshake. Jam up guy and jam up fisherman for sure! Ask him to teach you to use the bait caster in under 10 minutes and beat my time of under 5! 😂 Such a fun trip and already scheduled our next outing with him before we left the boat!

Wow.....!

We wanted something to do as a team and this was the chosen activity although, I had never fished before.

I was enthusiastic but, to be honest did not know what to expect and wasn't really expecting any success or if I am really being honest, to enjoy it all that much (fishing had never really appealed to me).

How wrong I was! We arrived on Monday night at the cabin that had been organized by Jim and it was great. Clean, comfortable and with everything you would possibly need. It was also across the road from the boat jetty where we would be collected the following morning, this really made a difference when we were hitting the water at 05:30.

There were 5 of us which, meant we had three boats and our particular captain was Jeff.

We quickly hit the water and found our first fishing spot (we had many throughout the day) where Jeff, was a great instructor and very patient with a complete newbie and really took time to teach me everything from casting, to the technique's for attracting and catching fish to finally reeling them in.

As I said I, was pessimistic about my potential success and with my initial lack of casting abilities, we were all amazed (especially me) that I didn't hook someone and that at least one of us, didn't get a new piercing to go home with. Mix this, with my uncanny ability to knot the line or, cast in the wrong direction and less that a few meters from the boat, it looked like it was going to be a long day.

Jeff however did not give up on me and was supportive and encouraging throughout, always having a rod available ready to go with bait irrespective ofd how many times I fouled the line.

So lets move on a few hours and I am casting (fairly competently and still injury free for all) and catching fish that I would never believe and in fact, not only did I get the biggest fish of the day (although my colleagues may argue) I also believe I caught the most fish....

The whole experience was incredibly well organized and I cannot fault anything or recommend highly enough.

Jim and his team are incredibly well organized, knowledgeable and most importantly great fun and focus on making the day a great fishing experience. If I get the opportunity I will definitely be back.

So whether you are an experienced fisherman like most of my colleagues or, a complete novice like myself I could not recommend Guntersville Bass Guides highly enough.

I want to start by saying I am a weekend angler. When I am not fishing tournaments, I am usually practicing for them. I work a full time job so it is very important to maximize my time on the water. My fishing partner and I reached out to Jim and didn't know what to expect since this was our first guide trip. It was one of the best days we have ever had on the water. We fished out of a brand new Legend boat, loaded out with power poles, new electronics, and top of the line rod and reels. It was like we had another friend in the boat, a friend that knew where the big bass lived. He doesn't just point and tell you where to throw, he teaches what you throwing at and why they are there. I recommend Jim and his guides to anyone and we will be going again soon. I feel like we didn't just meet a dependable guide but a new friend.

Captain Jim put us on the bass within a half hour of getting out on the lake. The bass stopped biting early on that hot June day, but not before I caught the biggest largemouth I have caught!

Today was my first time ever doing a guided fish and it was AMAZING. Jeff was our guide and he could not have done a better job. He put us on the fish, made sure my line/worms etc. was ready at all times, had a back up pole for me and even let me borrow his Huk shirt to keep me from getting more fried! I never write google reviews, but after my trip I felt it would be a disservice to Jim if I didn't because I flat-out had one of the best afternoons fishing of my life. If you're looking to catch great fish and learn a ton, stop your search and call Jim to book a trip. It's like going out with a long-time fishing buddy, except he always answers his phone, he's punctual, and has everything prepared for you. I am a decently experienced fisherman but lack time spent on the water, so in addition to wanting to catch some Guntersville giants, I was really hoping to gain some knowledge. Check and check. Jim's knowledge of fish behavior and his adaptability are fantastic. As we went out, he said we were going to be doing something different than he had planned - but landing a 5-pounder on my 3rd cast proved he knew the right calls to make. We sacked up 6 that were photo-worthy weighing close to 30 pounds in 4 hours. Despite peppering him constantly with questions on hows and whys of fish theory, he graciously shared his knowledge and experience. The only thing we missed out on was the opportunity to get video footage of him bear hugging a 7-1/2 pounder over the side of the boat to make sure she didn't get away! Well, let me start with my first meeting with Capt Jim. I was paired up with him in a BFL bass tour as a co angular. As most competitive, co angular bass fisherman know. Your success really is in the hands of the pro angular and how he helps or prevents you from catching fish. Capt Jim was a true professional! He gave me lures to try and gave me a fair shot at the same fish he was trying to catch. The experience was so good that I had to fish with him again on his home turf. My experience was even better this time. He put me on the fish, gave me advise, and made it absolutely perfect. Except for the 10lb plus bass that came unbuttoned which was more disheartening for him it seemed. I had so much fun that even that couldn't ruin my trip. I highly recommend that you book a trip asap! Once more people find out how good he really is, good luck finding a day with his full schedule. Capt Jim, will you be able to fish at night? Lol

Great Time My dad and I went out with GBG on Saturday and caught about 30 fish. We caught some solid fish and Matt was terrific. Would definitely recommend him to anyone looking to learn a lot about the lake and fishing in general.

I caught my personal best bass of 7.5lb My first trip to Guntersville in the fall of 2013 would prove to be the trip that started an obsession with this lake. Jim Leary took us out and we had the experience of a lifetime and I have the pictures to prove it! Without his knowledge of the area we would've been a lost ball in high weeds. However, we caught more quality fish from 3-6lbs than I can even count. It was such an experience that we came back the very next weekend and on the 2nd cast I caught my personal best bass of 7.5lb. Book your trip and you won't be sorry!

Fun day of fishing

Spring break and we booked a 6 hour trip with captain Jim. It was a once in a lifetime day. My 16 and 12 year old sons put together a 30 lb bag. With a 9, 8, 5, 4 & 4 lb fish. At least 15 fish caught in 6 hours. Professional and knowledgeable.

An Unforgettable Day ! My wife booked an evening trip for me for my birthday on Lake Guntersville will Jim Leary. I had never been to G-Ville and did not know what to expect. After meeting Jim at the ramp and seeing some pictures from his morning trip, I was pumped. We took off and made it to our first and only spot and it was on. 25 + fish . We kept 15 of our biggest to weigh. The small 5 was around 17lbs. Our middle 5 was 25lbs and our biggest 5 was 35lbs. Wow ! Truly a trip of a lifetime. It was so good that i changed my plans and went back out the next morning, although the bite slowed down from a cold front, we still had our best 5 go 23lbs. G-Ville is definitely on right now.
As for Jim, you won't meet a nicer guy. He puts in work day after day to make sure his clients are satisfied. He's the type of guy that will make you feel right at home while away from home. I highly recommend Jim if your thinking about fishing G-Ville.

Captain Mike was fantastic. He was there with the boat ready at 5am. We got right to catching fish. 4 hours went by real quick with non stop action. Whenever I fish Guntersville I’m contacting Mike from now on.

This was my wife and I first trip to Lake Guntersville and our first time meeting Jim. Great guy and an even better fishing experience. I caught my personal best and will be back to fish again. Thanks again for being so patient with us and giving us everything we expected.

My friend also caught his personal best. I had a great friend of mine visiting me from Colorado for the Holidays and the two of us were able to fish with Jim New Year's Eve. Jim was completely upfront and honest with us, explaining that the bite had changed with the weather and that we'd be working to figure things out. We set out on our adventure and Jim worked hard and methodically to figure out where the fish were staged at. Though the morning started slow, we were able to discern a great pattern and catch more than 12 bass under hard conditions to include a 5 bass sack weighing more than 19 lbs. My friend also caught his personal best. Not only was it great to catch fish on a tough day, but it was a lot of fun fishing with Jim; he has a great, fun personality and he still has a strong, driving passion to fish---he's not jaded out like I've experienced with fishing guides in the past. It was a wonderful experience all around and I'd highly recommend him to any angler.

Wow! What an unforgettable day on the lake with Captain Jim, my 12 year old son, and Belle. I blindly started a search for a bass guide for a mother/son fishing trip and I struck gold. By some miracle, I selected Guntersville Bass Guides and gave Captain Jim a call. He answered right then and had us booked in a flash. He answered all of my lodging questions and even helped me out with a list of recommended restaurants. What seemed like a huge ordeal suddenly got really simple with the help of Capt. Jim!
We had the most excellent time, ever. My son and I have talked about it nonstop since we left Guntersville yesterday. He wants to go back at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring Break. And it gets a lot worse for my pocketbook - he wants the entire Spring Break Week.
Captain Jim was there waiting on us at 5:45 and Belle took off at full speed to meet us strangers at the boat ramp. What a welcome! Although Jim explained that the fish were acting a little funky the past few days, his enthusiasm and expertise never waned. He taught us about the entire ecosystem. We got an education as he patiently explained everything about fishing to us, along with water levels, grasses, how the dam affects the water level and how that affects the fish, water temperatures, best times of year for fishing Guntersville, and on and on. It was fascinating and SO MUCH FUN!!! Capt. Jim is THE most patient person ever. He "mentioned" to my son at least 100 times how to be patient and how to do this or that. And Capt. Jim worked like a dog to take us to the fish, untangle, fix, explain, etc. He did everything possible to make sure we had the time of our lives. No joke.
My son hauled in a couple of nice ones and although I won the grass-catching tournament, I'm not sure who had more fun ... my 12 year old son or me. I expected to have a nice time, but my main goal was a great outing for my son. Well, clearly the great outing part was achieved in the first 30 minutes and it only got better and better. But I was shocked that not only did I have a great outing ... it was one of the best days I can remember.
We will book again with Captain Jim and Belle just as soon as we can get back up there.
Y'all will not find a better time or a better guide. Book with Capt. Jim now - just don't book so many that we can't get back in!!

I"m going to start out by thanking my girlfriend (Angela) for booking this trip for me. Captain Jim was very accommodating with her and took his time to explain the different packages he has to offer. She had no clue as to what to choose for me, but Captain Jim took his time with her and came up with a great option. I had originally planned to bring my son with me, but at the last minutes he could not go, so my brother was the lucky go to person. Captain Jim took care of making the hotel reservation and also provided us with a great BBQ lunch.
Our day of fishing started bright and early 6:15 am. Jim was already waiting for us with the boat already in the water. We launched off and went to the first spot. We were provided with all the equipment needed to go fishing (rods, reels) on a new Triton boat. Everything was top notch! First spot landed a 7 pound fish... WOW! I don't see those in the lake I fish. We quickly moved on fishing several different spots throughout the day. Fishing was a challenge that day due to the high winds, But that didn't phase Captain Jim. He is a true professional. He just pushed on locating the fish.
I highly recommend booking a fishing trip of a lifetime with Captain Jim and Guntersville Bass Guides. I promise that you will not be disappointed. This was a trip I will never forget and I hope that we will be able to go back this October or November and do some frog fishing with him.

Captain Jim is an awesome guide! He knows the lake very well, and was also extremely organized and prepared for our trip! He was very personable and patient and provided great service. Best of all, on a little bit of a tougher day he put me on some fish. When we got back to the boat launch all the other anglers struggled and were shocked when I told them how many fish we caught! Me and my son had 2 GREAT days of fishing with Jim and Shane. We caught a lot of big fish. My son was able to land his biggest fish ever an 8 lb 4 ounce giant! So glad Guntersville Bass Guides was able to take us out on such short notice. Thanks again and look forward to going fishing again with Jim and Shane in the future.

Jim and Guntersville Bass Guides are the best!. My son and I went out and had a blast. My son Carter, 16, has much more experience and was on the fish right away. Capt Jim took some time with me and was very patient but also very intent on making sure I was on.

Once I got the hang of it I caught a good amount and really nice sized Large Mouth Bass.

Son's already talking about a return trip soon! What a day.

03/2018. Third year coming back twice per year. Jim is one of the hardest working guides I know. He knows when I come to the BIG G, I'm looking for quality, not quantity!! He finds big fish, and he finds them quickly!!
I've told Jim on a number of occasions that if he needs a reference, have anyone contact me. I'm telling everyone, you won't be disappointed, from 1st time anglers, to fast action fishing, to hunt for big bass, Jim's got it all!!! Thank you Jim!! We will do it again tomorrow!!

Had a great trip with Jim. He is a great angler and good guy. From first timers to seasoned angler's you will learn what is working and patterns they are in. If you're coming in to Fish the lake Jim will save you a lot time. Not only did we catch fish. I come away with a new friend. PS, Miss Bell likes peanut butter crackers.

Had a ton of fun on the ride! When no more fish were biting he’d redirect us to a place full. Belle was super sweet and really helped me with my fear of the water. 10/10 would recommend.

I bought a guided trip with Captain Jim Leary for my husband's birthday! He loved it and wants to go back in the spring!

Writing this review right after getting home from the guided trip. Tough bite is the two words that describe the first few hours of the trip. 4lber first cast, a few more over the next 40 ish minutes, then the bite went away. Capt. Jim did everything he could to make sure we were back on the fish, and it worked. Caught a total of about 23 fish with a 5 fish bag of 22 lbs and some change. Kicker fish was 6.6. Jim is very knowledgeable and willing to help you whenever. He knows his stuff and is willing to share everything you need to know (unless you just browse his page looking for spots). If I had to come up with something negative it would’ve been out of his control any way and that would have been the wind. I say that, but even with the wind the fish were biting. Jim has a great attitude, good advice, good spots, good rods reels etc., good boat, and a good dog. Belle (the dog) did make a stage dive towards the end but it all turned out well. I had a fantastic time and will do my best to make it back with Jim someday hopefully soon!

fisherman and guide. I brought my boys down from PA to experience Lake Guntersville bass fishing and what a time we had with Mike. We got 19 bass with several 4-5 pounders and a 6 pounder for me! it was truly an unforgettable experience and when we return next year we are going out with Mike again!

My son and I booked captain Mike on a last minute request when our other guide cancelled our trip(on another lake). Mike was communicative, prompt and friendly. We had a great time on the water and he put us on fish right away. It was a tough day for fishing and we were able to put ‘em in the boat for a most of the of the day. We had more than 20 on the boat before noon. We would recommend captain Mike we had a blast.
We also loved that Mike fished with us. Not all guides do that. It was great to reference what he was doing while we were fishing along side of him! Go with Mike you won’t regret it.

Wanted to take a cousin out and experience the fishing on Lake Guntersville. Called Jim and he was able to get me a trip short notice and was easy to book. I expected to catch a few fish, but when you get about 30 fish in 4 hours, that is a good day. Capt Jim and his guides know Lake Guntersville and get you to the fish anytime of the day. We fished with Captain Jim. He was nice enough to work with my schedule for the day. I travel with 2 small dogs and they needed a mid day break.
I booked an 8 hour trip for two the last of April. We had storms the night before and high winds the morning of, however we were still on Big bass not long into the morning. I have fished allot of places and never caught this many big bass in one day.

If you want to enjoy your day on the water learn a little about bass habits and laugh some this is the Captain for you. We had allot of fun and plan on staying in contact with Cpt Jim who knows 1 day he may come fishing with me.

Best day of fishing I’ve had on lake Guntersville hands down. Jim with Guntersville Bass Guides put us on some great spots for large mouth. This trip was originally planned for February but the weather had been bad the day before and the lake just wasn’t cooperating.
