Guntersville Is Changing, And The Recipe Is Finally Lining Up
Memorial Day weekend is here on Lake Guntersville, and the lake is finally starting to show signs of change.
We are not all the way into summer fishing yet, but we are getting closer. The shad spawn has pretty much wrapped up, the heat is finally showing up, rain is back in the forecast, and the fish are starting to slide into that next phase.
There is a little bit of everything happening right now. We are seeing some shellcracker activity. The mayfly hatch looks like it is beginning to get started in places. A few bass are still hanging around beds. Some fish are shallow. Some are moving. Some are already trying to set up different.
That is late May on Guntersville.
The recipe is lining up. We are just impatient. That is normal in the fishing world. We get in our heads, we get ahead of ourselves, and sometimes we start thinking one thing while Mother Nature is doing another. Maybe that is her way of protecting her critters and making us earn it.
The Shad Spawn Run Was A Good One
We can pretty much say the shad spawn is finally done.
And it was a heck of a run.
The mornings were awesome for a long stretch. Most days gave us that early window where you could get around bait, get around activity, and make something happen before the lake settled down.
But every good thing has to move along eventually. That deal is fading out now, and the fish are starting to make the next move.
We have a couple new areas starting to produce, and those fish are just now getting to them. They are sliding out, setting up different, and acting a whole lot different than what we have been doing the last several weeks.
The presentation is different. The water is different. The timing is different. And the way you have to fish it is different.
We are not going to give away the exact deal here. That part goes to our paying clients. But we can say this much. The new stuff we are finding is producing some pretty dang big fish.
Right Now, It Is A Little Bit Of Everything
This is not one of those reports where every guide is doing the same thing.
Right now, we have guides catching fish several different ways. There is still a frog bite, and it seems to be getting a little stronger. We have moving bait bites showing up. We have a worm bite. There are still some jig bites. Even a crankbait is getting in the conversation.
That is Guntersville during a transition.
Can you go do what you want to do and catch fish? Yes, more than likely. Can you count on it being consistent all day long while everything is shifting around? That part is a maybe.
But one thing is for sure. This is the shake up we have been waiting on.
These fish need to get into the right mindset for summer. They need to start grouping up, feeding more aggressively, and competing with each other instead of being scattered from one end of the lake to the other.
It is time for them to start living in areas the size of your living room.
The lake is not easy every minute right now, but it is telling us what is coming. You just have to listen before you run past it.
The Better Fish Are Starting To Show In New Places
One of the best parts of this week was seeing some better fish show up as the lake started changing.
We are not saying it is automatic. It is still fishing. You still have to make good decisions, stay with the conditions, and not get stuck trying to force yesterday’s deal into today’s lake.
But the quality is there. The fish are healthy. And when you get around the right ones, you can feel this lake trying to set up for something better.
Capt. Derek had a big one show up in his boat this week too, and that is the kind of bite that keeps everybody paying attention.
Heat, Rain, Current, And The Summer Setup
The forecast looks like we are sliding into that summer rhythm now.
Heat. Muggy air. Pop up rain. Afternoon showers. Clouds building. Then a little fresh water moving through the system.
A lot of folks complain about that kind of weather, but for fishing, we will take it.
Rain can keep things moving. It can cool things down just enough. And most importantly, it can help get TVA moving water through the system.
Current is a big deal on the Tennessee River. When the fish start sliding out and grouping up, moving water can turn a decent area into a real area fast.
That is what we are watching right now.
We are not trying to act like it is wide open summer fishing yet. It is not. But the ingredients are starting to line up, and this lake can change in a hurry when heat, rain, bait, current, and timing all start pointing the same direction.
Crappie Trips Are Still Producing Too
It was not just bass this week. We had more crappie trips, and those boats kept putting fish in front of clients.
Some real nice ones hit the deck, including a big slab that tells us this bite still has some life left in it.
That is one of the good things about Lake Guntersville right now. Whether somebody wants to chase bass, spend a day crappie fishing, or put together a mixed trip when the schedule allows, there are still options.
What This Means For The Next Couple Weeks
The next couple weeks could be interesting.
Not because everything is perfect right now. It is not.
It could be interesting because the lake is finally starting to show us the pieces we have been waiting on. The shad spawn is ending. Fish are sliding. More heat is showing up. Rain is in the forecast. The frog bite is getting better. Offshore stuff is starting to get checked. And the better fish are starting to show themselves in new places.
That is usually how Guntersville goes.
It does not always announce the change with fireworks. Sometimes it just gives you a few clues. A better bite here. A new stretch there. A fish that should not have been where it was two weeks ago. A bait that suddenly starts getting more attention.
Then all at once, it feels like the lake made a decision.
We are not there all the way yet, but we are closer.

That is enough to have our attention.
And if this thing keeps sliding the way it looks like it wants to, heck yeah, let’s go fishing.
