Lake Guntersville Is Settling Into Summer
Lake Guntersville has settled into what we believe she is going to be for a while. The bass are in some of the same areas they have used in past summers, but they are also showing up in a lot of new areas, and we like that.
New areas mean fresh fish. Fresh fish are a good thing before those schools get found, pressured, and beat up by everybody else. The best part is the size is there. We are seeing good quality bass consistently now, and that is the biggest thing we wanted to see.
Mother Nature finally seems to have her pets comfortable for summertime. The heat has helped, the fish are acting better, and the lake is starting to fish more like Lake Guntersville should fish this time of year.
The Bass Bite Is Front And Center
The bass have been putting on a show for us. It is still fishing, and there are still bite windows, but we feel like things are straightening out. The lake is not perfect every hour of the day, but the overall direction is a lot better.
Most of the bass are deeper than what they were last week, and the baits changed a lot in one week. It can be day to day on what they want to eat, but for the most part we have it narrowed down to a handful of presentations.
The exciting part for our guides is that we are getting to throw some traditional stuff again. It is not a bunch of goofy looking new stuff. It is the kind of fishing we have not gotten to do much of in a while, and that has everybody at Guntersville Bass Guides fired up.
“The lake finally feels like it is settling into summer. We are seeing better fish, better groups, and some fresh areas that have not been hammered yet.”
Grass Bite And Deep Bite Are Both Working
What is nice right now is we have a good grass bite and an even better deep bite when you get around the right group of fish. That does not mean you pull up and catch them on every stop. The deep bite can make you work.
Some days you may have to run half a dozen spots. Some days it may take a dozen. But when you get on the right one and those fish are ready to eat, you can catch them. That is the part that feels like Guntersville.
The heat is doing what we wanted it to do. It is warming the lake up, helping push more fish into summer areas, and giving us a better idea of what each section of the lake is trying to become.
It may take some running, but when the right group is ready, Lake Guntersville can still show out in a hurry.
The Upper End, Mid Lake, And Lower End
The upper end is fishing really well, but you still have to fish to find the right pods. A lot of those fish are around grass. Some groups may give up 5 or 6 fish, and a really good pod can give up 15 fish or a little more when everything lines up.
Mid lake is where we are starting to see more of the deeper ledge fishing, shell beds, and grass mixed together. There are still grass fish in that section too, but there are more places holding fish in general. Right now, that middle part of the lake probably has the most options.
The lower end does not seem to have as many places loaded up, but the places that do have them can have a good number of fish. The challenge is those fish can be educated. You may catch a handful out of a school, then you either have to leave and come back or sit there and be very patient.
Bite Windows Are Real Right Now
There are definitely bite windows right now. Early mornings and late evenings have been the best, but we are also seeing a strong midday bite at times. Between those windows, there can be some downtime where you catch one here, one there, or maybe run into a small group.
TVA current is still one of the biggest keys. The funny part is we have had rain and they have not pulled much water, then we have had hardly any rain and they start pulling. That is just part of fishing a Tennessee River lake.
We need the heat to keep building so more air conditioners are running and power demand goes up. If TVA pulls water more consistently, that current can help set the fish up better and make the bite more predictable.
“You can tell when the fish are positioned right. It may be slow between windows, but when the school gets right, you better be ready.”
Schooling Fish Are Showing Up
We are starting to see more schooling activity in all 3 sections of the lake. They are not always the biggest fish, but they are fun fish, and they are chasing hard when they come up.
Topwater can help some time go by when those fish are chasing. If you just want to catch fish and enjoy the action, that schooling bite can be a good way to keep rods bent during parts of the day.
The bigger fish are still more about being around the right grass, shell, ledges, current, and feeding windows, but schooling activity is a good sign that the lake is getting more alive.
Schooling fish may not always be the biggest ones, but they can turn a slow stretch into a fun stretch fast.
Isabella’s First Largemouth Bass Trip
One of the best stories from the week came from Capt. Jim getting to guide Isabella and her father. Isabella is 7 years old, speaks Portuguese and English, and she was the translator for the boat.
They are from Brazil, where they have peacock bass, but not largemouth bass like we have here on Lake Guntersville. This was Isabella’s first largemouth bass fishing trip, and she did really well.
What stood out was how well she listened. When Capt. Jim told her how to fish, she did it. She paid attention, worked the bait, and caught her first largemouth bass with Guntersville Bass Guides. That is another achievement in our books.
Most of the bass she caught were good ones, with one being around 2.5 pounds. For a first largemouth bass trip, that is pretty special. We hope to see Isabella and her father again because that was a moment we were proud to be part of.
“Isabella was impressive. She listened, she fished hard, and for her first largemouth bass trip, she handled herself really well.”
Why Having A Guide Team Matters
This week also showed why booking with an actual guide service matters. We had a boat go down. Nothing major, just a cheap part that broke, but it still affected the second trip of the day.
Instead of leaving clients hung out to dry, the team pulled together. That trip was moved to the next morning and covered by another guide who was supposed to have the day off. He ran the morning trip, helped the team, and still got home to handle what he needed to do with his family.
That is one of the benefits of booking with Guntersville Bass Guides. We are not a single boat operation. We have multiple captains, multiple boats, and a team that can work together when real life happens.
Guide Notes From The Week
Capt. Phillip had solid trips. Capt. Scott had solid trips. Capt. Jim had several good moments on the water. Capt. Derek caught fish too, but there is one small problem. He did not take pictures again.
We thought we had Capt. Derek trained back in the spring when he started taking pictures, but the last few trips he has slipped back into just catching fish and having a good time. That is not a bad problem, but we know everybody likes seeing the pictures.
We will get him back on track. For now, just know the fish were caught, even if the camera did not make it out like it should have.
“The lake is giving us more ways to catch them now. Some fish are in the grass, some are deeper, and the better groups are starting to show up.”
Crappie Trips Are Still In The Mix
We did have some crappie trips this week, and overall they have been biting pretty good. Some days are better than others, because it is still fishing, but the crappie bite is still part of what we are doing.
That said, the bass are front and center right now. The way the largemouth are starting to set up, the quality we are seeing, and the amount of summer movement happening across the lake has most of our attention on the bass bite.
More Lake Guntersville Bass From The Week
Not every fish in a report needs to be talked about like it is the biggest one in the lake. Some are average fish, some are a little better than average, and some are just part of a good day on the water.
The important thing is the lake is producing bites, the fish are getting more grouped up, and the overall size is trending in the right direction.
What This Tells Us Going Forward
This report feels a lot more positive than some of the transition reports we have had lately. Lake Guntersville is not perfect, but she is acting more like summer now.
The fish are in grass, on shell, on ledges, and in some new areas that have us excited. The better fish are showing up more consistently, and the bite windows are getting easier to understand.
We still want more consistent current. We still want the heat to keep building. We still want those deeper schools to get even more reliable. But overall, this is a good direction, and we like where this looks like it is headed.
Fish With Our Team
Guntersville Bass Guides is built around a full guide team, not a one boat operation. That matters when the lake is changing, the schedule is busy, and clients need trips handled the right way.
Our guides are covering different water, different techniques, and different sections of Lake Guntersville. That gives clients a better chance of being paired with the style of fishing they want and the pattern that is working best.
Fish Now, Pay Later
If you are wanting to get on the calendar but want to split up the cost, our Fish Now, Pay Later option is still available.
This can help anglers lock in a Lake Guntersville fishing trip while the summer bite continues to build.
Final Thoughts Going Into The Week
This Father’s Day report comes with a good feeling about where Lake Guntersville is headed. The bass are settling in, the size is showing up, and we are seeing enough new water and fresh groups to stay excited.
It is still not a pull up anywhere and catch them deal. You have to fish. You have to move. You have to understand when to stay and when to leave. But when the right school is ready, the lake is giving up good fish.
The grass bite is good. The deep bite can be better. The upper end, mid lake, and lower end are all offering something different. That is exactly why we like having a guide team on the water comparing notes and keeping up with what Lake Guntersville is doing.
