Lake Guntersville Fishing Report — December 14, 2025
Roller-coaster weather, clear water over healthy hydrilla, birds on bait, and a steady bite for both bass and crappie.
Weather Whiplash… and the Bite Stayed Solid
We’ve had a little bit of a roller coaster of weather. What’s new, right? This December has been different — not like one we can remember in a long time. Even with the swings, fishing has remained solid from bass to crappie. We’ve had a steady bite on a small handful of baits, and late this week we expanded out on a couple others. Not sure what to think other than this: they’re still gorging.
The fish are still moving around every day, but one thing is really sticking out. When we get around the grass and you look down, your depth finder says you’re sitting in 8 feet of water… and you can literally see the bottom. We’ve got some serious visibility right now. On top of that, the hydrilla looks unfazed — healthy, thick, and growing. It honestly reminds us of late July / early August in the way it looks… not topped out, but dense and strong.
And yes — there’s always a possibility of fish burying up in that grass during these massive cold fronts. It wouldn’t surprise us at all. But when you get out away from it, you’re fine. The bait and the bass have been showing themselves… especially with birds. When the birds are truly on the right stuff, it can make life pretty simple. On the days they aren’t telling the truth — they’re still around fish, but not the kind of fish that makes you feel like you’re cheating.
We’ve also had some winds this week that were flat-out ridiculous — the kind of wind you couldn’t even fly a kite in (it would destroy a kite). We tough it out, catch what we can, hide where we can… and the lake still keeps proving why it’s hands-down #1 in the country — if not the world.

Crappie Update — Capt. Scott Is Dialed In
Scott has been on some seriously big crappie lately — the kind that makes you say, “Where have these been the last three months?” Either way, they’re here now and he’s dialed in.
Capt. Scott says:
“This seems to be a good time to fill your freezer. They’re not incredibly hard to catch — just knowing where they’re at is half the battle, and knowing how they want it…
and that’s where I handle that part. You just have to catch them.”

Bass Update — Capt. Phillip Is Making the Right Moves
Capt. Phillip has been putting in the time even when he’s not on a guided trip — very dedicated, and it shows. He’s been on a roll. His instincts have been incredible lately, and we’ve seen him do full 180s on trips: load the boat, go to a different part of the lake, and hit home runs. You can say the man is dialed in with nature and Lake Guntersville.
This week kept reinforcing the same theme: bait, visibility, and making clean decisions. Some days the birds basically point you to the right deal. Other days you’ve got to read what the lake is telling you and commit. Phillip has been doing exactly that — and the results keep stacking.
When the weather swings like this — cold front, warm up, wind, calm, then repeat — the biggest mistake people make is fishing like the lake is “supposed” to be. Phillip has been fishing the lake that’s actually in front of him… and that’s the difference.

Capt. Jim — Steady 4-Pounders and the Occasional Giant
Captain Jim has been having some trips with camera-shy clients — they just don’t want their picture taken. They’re not about the “hey look at me, look what I did.” They’re there to fish… and that’s what they’ve done.
Not big numbers — but a steady 4-pound average with the occasional 6–7 pounder mixed in. This isn’t like any normal fall transition into winter time. The fish just are not like they have been in the past, so we’ve had to make some new adjustments — stuff we haven’t done in a very long time — but they are eating. You just have to know where.
The Windy Days… We Still Got It Done
The windy days were the ones where you had to earn it. We hid where we could, picked our moments, and still caught fish. If there’s one thing Guntersville does better than anywhere, it’s keep producing even when Mother Nature is acting crazy.

Outlook: Warm-Ups, Movement, and a Special Setup Ahead
The forecast is looking like another warm-up going into next weekend — and that seems to be the trend right now. The fish get settled in colder weather, then it heats up and they start moving again. That’s kind of the pattern we’re on.
Until we get a steady cold where every day it says it’s 50° and every night 30°, the fish and the grass stay moving around. But this is lining up to be just what we need for an incredible pre-spawn bite — which will start in about six weeks. If you’re in the market for a trophy, you need to look at these time frames and book your date.
