Lake Guntersville is showing out right now—both the crappie and bass bites are firing on all cylinders. It’s been one of the most action-packed stretches we’ve seen in a long time, and the patterns are wide open. Whether you’re a frog fisherman, deep water graph chaser, or love a mid-depth crank or worm—you can pick your favorite way to catch them and go.
We’re seeing big fish mixed in with the average size—a sign of a healthy system. This kind of versatility is rare, even for Guntersville. If you’ve been around a while, you’ll remember the powerhouse years of 2013 to 2015. Those were the hay days for numbers of big bass, especially 6+ pounders. Today, we might not have quite as many giants, but we have more fish overall, and a healthy mix of quality throughout. If nothing changes drastically, we’re set to explode again in the next couple of years.
Captain Derek Remitz – Elite Experience, Local Precision
Captain Derek has been busy—very busy. Since joining Guntersville Bass Guides, he’s been in high demand, and rightfully so. He’s a Bassmaster Elite Series Champion, and now he’s guiding full-time on one of the country’s best fisheries.
The feedback from his trips has been phenomenal. Clients are raving about the experience—not just for the fishing, but for the knowledge and laid-back fun that Derek brings to the boat. He’s a true professional, but more than that, he’s a great guy to spend the day with. You’ll learn something, you’ll catch fish, and you’ll leave with more than just a few photos.
Captain Phillip Criss – Legendary Guide, Globally Respected
If there’s anyone swinging for the fences this month, it’s Captain Phillip Criss. He’s been knocking it out of the park every trip—bass or crappie, doesn’t matter. The guy is dialed in.
In the past two weeks, Phillip has been guiding international clients from Ukraine, Moldova, and the United Kingdom, introducing them to their first American bass on Lake Guntersville. That’s something special. Every guest walked away with a great experience and lifelong memories—Phillip made sure of that.
He’s also been on a tear with the crappie bite, stacking up limits and sending folks home with enough for multiple fish fries. It’s been a strong run, and it’s not slowing down yet.
Captain Jim Leary – Sonar, Strategy, and Steady Results
Captain Jim has been balancing advanced sonar classes and guided trips. His clients are learning the ins and outs of their electronics and catching bass while doing it.
Fishing has been steady through the mornings, tapering a bit late morning, then picking back up as the afternoon progresses. Jim’s strategy? Bounce around. When the shallow bite fades, head out deep. When it slows again, move. That adaptability has been key during this transitional period.
Crappie Fishing – Limits & Fish Fry Weather
We’ll keep it simple: Crappie fishing has been incredible.
The guides have been knocking their lights out, with daily limits and plenty of slabs. If it gets better than this, we don’t know what to tell you. Whether you’re filling the freezer or planning your next fish fry, now’s the time to book.

Looking ahead, we’re expecting bigger bass to group up tighter as summer patterns lock in. Ledge fishing is going to shine, and the numbers are already building. Expect to hit those spots where you can catch fish, move to the next, and repeat all day. That kind of rhythm is what made this lake famous, and it feels like we’re entering that window again.
The fish have been in a transition mode, but that’s about to settle down—and when it does, it’s going to get real fun, real fast.
